The Joran van der Sloot confession came the night before a re-enactment of the alleged murder of the Flores girl. The reason Sloot provided for killing the young woman was that she invaded his privacy, and with a history like his, that could be dangerous, as it apparently was for Flores. She accessed his laptop without his permission, which apparently revealed information regarding a murder of a woman in the U.S.

The disappearance of Natalee Holloway from Aruba on a senior trip took place on May 30, 2005. Stephany Flores was murdered on May 30, 2010, which was five years to the day of the Holloway disappearance. That is kind of creepy.

The sad part of the whole case is that prior to Flores' death, van der Sloot had contacted the Holloway girl's mother to extort money in exchange for information regarding her disappearance. Authorities became involved and admissions by van der Sloot were videotaped implicating him in her murder. Not only that, this was also evidence of his extortion involvement as well.

Instead of the Aruban government using their authority to hold Sloot for at least 30 days based on this evidence, he slips out of sight and flees to South America, only to commit another crime in the murder of Stephany Flores. Who knows what might have happened if he had been detained?

The Joran van der Sloot confession of the Flores murder should be enough to hold him, for a while anyway, until his murder trial, unless he finds some way to slip out of a Peruvian prison. A conviction could carry a maximum sentence of 35 years. It is unclear at this time if a confession will have any bearing on a reduced sentence.

As far as Natalee Holloway's disappearance, it is unclear if the truth will ever be revealed since it is hard to determine when Sloot is telling the truth and when he is lying. Only time will tell.
